I've been flying a lot on Southwest in the past year or so, and I'm excited to see that so many readers have enjoyed my previous reviews of Southwest's in-flight entertainment choices (believe it or not, but they are my most popular blog posts, according to my WordPress stats.)
Quick recap though for the uninitiated: last summer, Southwest unveiled a brand new onboard entertainment system. Using your mobile device (iPad, iPhone, etc.), you can either watch free live TV, stream free TV episodes, rent movies to stream for $5 apiece, or access the internet on your device for $8. All-in-all, I have been a big fan of the choices.
In my last review of the system, however, I lamented the lack of kid-friendly content. I recommended that parents still load up their devices in advance with content, as Southwest had little to offer for kids, particularly among the free choices. I flew Southwest again a little over a week ago, and I'm happy to report that the airline has really expanded the entertainment options for the little ones -- both free and paid! Southwest could still use a live TV channel that is kid-friendly (Sprout, Disney Channel, etc.), but this is a big improvement. Another two thumbs up to the evolution of this Southwest product.
Here is a list of what was available on my last flight in early April 2014:
Free TV Episodes
- My Little Pony
- Littlest Pet Shop
- Pound Puppies
- Transformers: Prime
Movies to Rent ($5)
- Ice Age Continental Drift
- Ice Age Dawn of the Dinosaurs
- Rio
- Planet 51
- The Lorax
- Despicable Me
- Hugo
- Diary of a Wimpy Kid
- Spy Kids 3: Game Over
Have you been on a recent Southwest flight? What kid-friendly content did you spot? I wonder if the choices will change monthly like many airlines. Stay tuned...
